Figure 13a. God and other spirits may live in a higher dimensional space. This picture is a simplified metaphor.   Imagine that we live in a TV screen (2D), and that God lives in a 3D house. In fact, we live in a 3D braneworld, and God could live in 10D space outside braneworlds.

In 1884, Edwin Abbott published a novel entitled "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions". In this novel, he suggested that God could live in a higher dimensional space. He imagined that we lived in a flat world (such as a TV screen), and God lived in a three-dimensional (3D) house (Figure 13a).

Modern physics has found that higher-dimensional space does exist. The world we live in has only three dimensions: length, width, and height. This 3D world is vast, but not infinite. It consists of approximately 170 billion galaxies. The number of stars in each galaxy ranges from ten million to a hundred trillion. Our galaxy is known as the Milky Way. A few decades ago, astronomers thought that this 3D world represented the entire universe. However, the String Theory which emerged in the 1970s suggests that there is a much larger "bulk universe" that contains our 3D world. The String Theory is now widely accepted by theoretical physicists. According to String Theory, the bulk universe has ten dimensions (10D) of space, comprising many sub-universes called "braneworld". Our 3D world is one of the “braneworlds” (Figure 13b).

Figure 13b. The organization of the bulk universe. The bulk universe has ten dimensions of space, containing numerous sub-universes called "braneworld". Our braneworld has three dimensions of space, consisting of approximately 170 billion galaxies. The number of stars in each galaxy ranges from ten million to a hundred trillion. Before the advent of the String Theory, our braneworld was thought to be the entire universe.

If Heaven is indeed located in the 10D space outside braneworlds, then based on the String Theory (next chapter), we can understand why we cannot see God (Chapter 15) and why the soul should be a gravitational geon (Chapter 16).
